[Hong Kong 18th Reuters]-In the November 24 Hong Kong District Assembly (local assembly, 452 seats), democratic powers run for almost all seats. Inspired by a four-month protest against the Hong Kong government, the voting result is likely to be a barometer of the level of support for the apple moon government.
The parliamentary elections have so far received little attention, with most of them being pro-Chinese candidates. However, this time, a record high of 1,104 candidates and candidate voter registration reached a record high of 4.1 million.
"Democratic protests have stimulated a lot of people, especially the younger generation who previously hadn't looked at voting or voting," said democratic veteran politician Emily Lau.
Democrat activist Joseph Chen has told broadcaster RTHK that he had struggled to collect candidates for just a few months ago.
The district assembly election does not directly affect the power chart of the Hong Kong Legislature (Parliament). The district council, however, has local spending authority and is a training area for promising new politicians. In addition to affecting the composition of the committee that elects the Hong Kong Executive Secretary, a part of the legislative assembly is selected by the district council members.
“The people of Hong Kong are starting to see the election as a means of expressing their opinion on the overall situation in Hong Kong and the administration of the director of the apple,” said Kenneth Chan, an associate professor at Hong Kong Babtest University.
