(CNN) - The election results show that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party will return to power in Canada, but as a minority government after Monday's general election, according to CBC News and CTV News.

The victory ensures that Trudeau will be prime minister for a second term.

Trudeau spoke to a crowd shouting with joy in Montreal about his victory.

“From coast to coast to coast, tonight the Canadians rejected division and negativity. They rejected the cuts and austerity. They voted in favor of a progressive agenda and strong action on climate change, ”he said. "We will make life more affordable, we will continue to fight against climate change, we will get our weapons out of our streets."

Trudeau, liberal, and Andrew Scheer, conservative, were the two main contenders in Monday's general election. More than 300 parliamentary seats were available. According to reports, medical care, the climate crisis and the cost of living are the main problems that concern voters.

Trudeau, 47, gained key support last week from former President Barack Obama, but the prime minister has faced a difficult campaign after revelations he disguised himself with brown makeup on his face in the past. He said he didn't know how many times he put on racist makeup.

Last month, Time magazine published a photo of Trudeau with a coffee-painted face when he was a school teacher in 2001. Trudeau said he had attended a New Year's Eve gala with the theme "Arab Nights" when the photo was taken .

He said it was a racist photo, but he did not consider it racist at the time.

In his apology, Trudeau admitted that he wore dark makeup when he was in high school as part of a talent show in which he sang the Jamaican folk song "Day-O". The CNN affiliate, CTV News, obtained that second photo from a source that said it was a photo of Trudeau in a Brebeuf College yearbook.

A video of Trudeau with a painted face emerged in the early 1990s.

Trudeau apologized after Time magazine published the first photo, and again after the three photos appeared.

The candidates

Trudeau assumed as prime minister in November 2015. He is the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and is the first son of a Canadian prime minister to be elected to the position.

He managed to awaken the 'Trudeaumania' that brought his late father to power in the 1960s.

Scheer tried and failed to capitalize on the scandal and criticism of Trudeau. But neither its negative emphasis nor its policies have involved voters. Scheer is fiscally and socially conservative, offering the promise of a stable government with balanced tax cuts and budgets.

During the campaign, Scheer revealed that he is a US citizen, with dual citizenship of Canada and the United States. He said he is in the process of renouncing his US citizenship. Dual citizenship does not legally disqualify someone from running for prime minister.

Some disenchanted voters left Trudeau and decided on the leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh, as an option. Singh has advocated climate action and a government-funded drug program. He is a practicing Sikh whose colorful turbans illustrate the changing complexion of the country.

Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, and the leader of the Bloc party, Yves-François Blanchet, a separatist from Quebec, were also on the ballot.

Caroline Kelly, Paula Newton, Rebekah Riess, Steve Almasy, Eric Levenson, Julia Jones, Joe Sutton and Dave Alsup of CNN contributed to this report.
