North Macedonia (formerly Macedonia), a small country on the Balkans that changed its name to join the long-awaited European Union (EU), was put on the entry negotiations at the EU Summit on the 18th. Prime Minister Zaev, who has advanced the pro-EU route, has been forced to resign early.
The main political party in North Macedonia decided to hold it on April 12 ahead of the general election scheduled for the end of next year. The Zaev administration will retire early next January. Mr. Zaev said, “The EU broke the promise” and said, “I and the people were very disappointed.”
Northern Macedonia has been confronting Greece for many years over the country name “Macedonia” since 1991, independent of the former Yugoslavia. “It's hard to admit that other countries claim to be named after the king of Macedonia, the hero of Alexander the Great,” the Greek side claimed.
