In spite of the challenges, the Ministry of Agriculture is working to support the important agricultural sector in the coming stage through the establishment of a new mechanism for marketing agricultural products internally and externally, where a package of measures has been adopted to support the cultivation and marketing of citrus crops. Exports, which defines the set of quality procedures for those wishing to adopt their products for export.

In a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin, Dr. Ibrahim Meda explained that the program includes all agricultural products in all stages of work from agriculture to production, packaging and marketing. The program aims to increase the quantity and value of exported citrus through improving the quality of the product and marketing it better, thus achieving good returns for farmers, exporting companies and packaging centers in order to maintain the reputation of Syrian agricultural products in foreign markets, pointing to its importance in the advancement of the agricultural economy in light of the economic siege and external competition. Director of the Agricultural Economy at the Ministry of Agriculture Ahmed Diab explained in a similar statement that the program includes all strategic agricultural products and can be developed if successful to be circulated to the rest of the governorates, stressing that its success requires government support and follow-up and coordination to study markets, prices, items, packaging and sorting in addition to the process of shipping and transport.

Diab pointed out that the ministry has formed a committee comprising representatives from the ministry, the Export Support Authority, the export committees, the chambers of agriculture and the peasants' union to examine and evaluate the farms that have applied to be included in the program and to provide the necessary support to farmers to be approved government facilities provided to the approved farms such as loans, fertilizers and others.

For his part, Eng. Suhail Hamdan, Director of the Citrus Office at the Ministry of Agriculture, said farmers suffer from their surplus production and the inability to market their crops at feasible prices in order to achieve economic feasibility of this agriculture, noting that the initial estimates of production in Tartous and Lattakia governorates are close to one million tons.

Hamdan pointed out the importance of providing workshops and sorting centers with international export standards to achieve added value for the product to help him to enter the foreign markets.

Regarding the program of dependence, Hamdan explained that there is a special form for the farm which includes its annual production and the percentage prepared for export by the owner or investor of the farm, the packing center or the exporting institution according to conditions that must be met at the farm such as the date of spraying and used pesticides and their source, harvesting, hygiene, sterilization, crop pest control system and standard specifications. And the expected quantities of each item for export.

Mohammad Fayyad, director of Damascus Rural Industry, explained that the percentage of agricultural crops used in the industry is limited to only 2.3 percent of production, despite the great potential that has not been invested in the agricultural manufacturing sector.

Bashar Al-Hajali, Director of Development and Economic Programs at the General Organization for Radio and Television, stressed the importance of the role of media in promoting Syrian citrus fruits.He pointed out that there is a professional media plan for external and internal marketing of citrus through designing a visual identity and media logo for citrus and Syrian agricultural products in general.

The program defines a set of quality measures for those wishing to adopt their products for export, starting with farms exceeding 2.5 hectares, followed by collection, sorting and packaging centers and agricultural marketing and export companies.
