(CNN) - “El Clasico” postponed between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid was rescheduled for December 18, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed in a statement Wednesday.
The game was originally scheduled for this Saturday, October 26 in Barcelona, but was postponed "when exceptional causes occur," according to the statement, after the resumption of independence protests in Catalonia.
On October 14, nine Catalan independence leaders received prison sentences of between nine and 13 years for their part in a failed attempt in 2017 to separate from Spain.

Three other defendants were found guilty of disobedience and were fined and disqualified from public office for 20 months.
The League had proposed an alternative date of December 4. The League has not yet commented on whether it will appeal the RFEF decision.
