Bachelet, who was president of Chile twice (2006-2010 and 2014-2018) expressed concern and sadness earlier this week about "violence, deaths and injuries" amid protests in Chile.

The ex-president called on the Government of Sebastián Piñera to work "with all sectors and find solutions to address grievances." Bachelet asked the protesters to protest peacefully.

I am very worried and sad to see violence, deaths and injuries in #Chile. I urge the Government to work with all sectors and find solutions to address grievances. I urge those who plan to participate in the protests to do so peacefully: https://t.co/bVO0aPEUci

“There are disturbing reports of excessive use of force by the security and armed forces, and I am also alarmed by the news that some detainees have been denied access to lawyers, which is their right, and that others have been mistreated while in detention, ”said Bachelet.

Citing the Chilean Ministry of Interior, Bachelet said that 1,906 people have been arrested since the protests began.

The violent demonstrations have taken the streets of Chile for two weeks.

Broken glass and streets full of bricks, shops and businesses looted and burned in Santiago and vandalized metro stations were affected during widespread demonstrations by economic inequalities, living costs and rising debt in Chile, a usually stable country.

Clashes between protesters and security forces have killed at least 18 people, eight of them on Sunday, on the deadliest day of the demonstrations.

This Tuesday Piñera apologized for "decades" of accumulated problems.

“In the face of the legitimate needs and social demands of citizens, we have received with humility and clarity the message that Chileans have given us. It is true that problems accumulated for many decades and that the different governments were not and were not able to recognize this situation in all its magnitude. I recognize and apologize for this lack of vision, ”said the president.

He also announced a series of pension reforms, contributions to complement pension savings, the creation of a guaranteed minimum income of 350.00 pesos per month, and the creation of a mechanism to stabilize electricity prices.
