(CNN Spanish) - The Ministry of Public Security of Guerrero, Mexico, reported Wednesday that nine people died in a clash between armed men in Guerrero state, in the southwest of the country.

The confrontation took place on the road that leads from Zitlala to Pochahuizco among alleged drug traffickers who, according to the authorities, had "high-powered weapons" in their possession.

At the scene, the experts collected 50 caliber 7.62 and 2.23 caliber caps used in AK47 and AR15 weapons, respectively, the statement said.

The nine subjects who lost their lives “are linked to the criminal cell led by Zenen Nava Sánchez, leader of the Los Rojos criminal group,” says the statement from the Guerrero Public Security Secretariat.

The authorities initiated a joint operation between the Secretary of Public Security of Guerrero, the Attorney General of Mexico to find those responsible for these acts of violence.

Los Rojos are a criminal group that emerged after the fragmentation of the Beltran Leyva Organization in Guerrero, according to the InsightCrime research portal. Their attempt to expand their control and influence has prompted them to indiscriminately use violence tactics as a visibility strategy.

According to a report from the Government of Mexico in 2016, the criminal gang of “Los Rojos” operates in the states of Guerrero and Morelos, “where the territory is disputed with La familia y Guerreros Unidos”

“Los Rojos are, in many ways, emblematic of the modern Mexican band,” says InsightCrime about this criminal group. “These have their roots in larger groups, but they don't have the name, or the connections in South America, which the larger groups do. As a result, they rely more on extortion and kidnapping than on drug trafficking, making them a volatile actor and a more direct threat to the civilian population. ”

Other violent events have been recorded in Guerrero this month. On October 15, an armed confrontation in the municipality of Tepochica, Guerrero, near Iguala, left a soldier and 14 civilians dead.

According to the statement of the Guerrero Coordination Group, "upon noticing this presence, armed civilians initiated an aggression in front of the elements of the National Defense Secretariat, resulting in the death of a military element as well as 14 armed civilians" .

The authorities have seized high-power weapons and three vehicles "with a report of theft" in which armed civilians moved.
