(CNN) - President Trump announced on Wednesday that he would lift all sanctions against Turkey after that country agreed to stop its attack on former US Kurdish allies in northeastern Syria.

This is what we know about your decision:

What Trump did not mention: Turkey's possible violations of international law. The US special envoy for Syria and the Global Coalition to defeat ISIS, Jim Jeffrey, told the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee that the United States believes that Turkey-backed opposition forces in Syria have committed crimes of war. "We have seen several incidents that we consider war crimes," Jeffrey said.

About ISIS fighters: Trump said his administration had done a "good job" and claimed that ISIS fighters who had escaped Kurdish prisons after the Turkish attack "have been largely recaptured." He said the Kurdish military leader was "extremely grateful for what the United States did" and assured the United States "that ISIS is under a very, very strict blockade." But Jeffrey told the House of Representatives lawmakers that the United States now estimates that more than 100 ISIS fighters had escaped and that "we don't know where they are."

Trump contradicted himself: Trump said today that the United States was "leaving" the Middle East, but earlier this month, he announced that the United States would send up to 3,000 additional soldiers to Saudi Arabia, which would pay for them.

Wrath in the Capitol: Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, said Trump's decision undermines the three goals declared by the administration regarding Syria: avoid a resurgence of ISIS, gain influence in any political solution in Syria and pressure for the withdrawal of all Iranian forces.

An agreement without the United States: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met on Tuesday to negotiate an agreement on Syria's civil war. Under the agreement, the Russian military police and the Turkish army will patrol the border. The United States was not included in the negotiation.
