Under the direction of President Bashar al-Assad, today the project of collecting water reservoirs for the town of al-Kafir in Sweida governorate was opened with a storage capacity of 130 thousand cubic meters to secure water for the town and surrounding villages.
Minister of Water Resources Hussein Arnous told reporters after the opening that the project includes three water dams with a total storage volume of about 130 thousand cubic meters and contributes to the provision of water for drinking and irrigation and stability for the people.
The Minister also reviewed the project to irrigate the suburb of Selim, which includes 5000 housing units at a cost of 950 million pounds. The governor of As-Suwayda Amer Ibrahim Al-Ashi said that the project includes supplying six underground wells with two reservoirs and providing water to 22,000 residents.
The Director General of the General Organization for Drinking Water, Wael Shuqair, said that the percentage of the implementation of one of the reservoirs exceeded 35 percent in addition to the completion of drilling and cladding one of the wells.
The tour also included a water treatment plant on the Habran Dam, which pumps 2400 cubic meters per day of drinking water for the towns of Kufr and Habran. To date 55 percent.
The project contributes to raising the risk of contamination from the Sahwa Balata Dam, lifting the pressure on the sewage network in Rasas town and securing the connection of the line with the site of the treatment plant being implemented.
During a meeting with stakeholders to discuss the water situation in the governorate, the Minister of Water Resources pointed out that the ministry is preparing the necessary studies to implement the project of irrigating the eastern and northeastern Sweida countryside and completing the implementation of all the remaining 21 wells by the end of 2021.
The participants' interventions called for the implementation of new sewage lines in As-Suwayda and a treatment plant in Salkhad and the rehabilitation of the road leading to the Khazmeh wells pool which covers the southern region of the governorate.
