The theme of the day: The dead in Essex come from China

The inspectors opened the doors; breathtaking stench reached them. They discovered a tangle of dead human bodies-54 dead men, four dead women, all Chinese between the ages of 19 and 30, all stifled on their way to a better world promised by conscienceless escape aids. Two men still had a weak pulse. They survived only.

Thus the SPIEGEL wrote about the heaviest refugee tragedy in Britain, in the year 2000. British customs officials had found in Dover at that time the corpses of 58 Chinese in a tomato van.

Since Wednesday, the country is dealing with a similar sized case, with a corpse, reminiscent of the tragedy of those times: 39 dead people were discovered in the container of a truck in Essex. Also this time, the British police confirmed, the dead come from China.

Several police vehicles accompanied the removal of the truck. In a safe place, the bodies were to be recovered

The horror of Grays - the current report by my colleagues Alexandra Rojkov and Max Polonyi read here. The reporters talked to Kaley, who runs a snack near the site - and saw ambulances, police cars, and firefighters running past his shack on Wednesday at half past two in the morning. "I thought maybe truck drivers had a fight and one was killed," says Kaley.

What had really happened, eyewitness Kaley learned from the news the next morning. Much is unknown about the backgrounds: Who were the dead? Where did the truck go? After the forensics had finished its work on Wednesday, the truck was driven away. The photo gallery for transporting the truck can be seen here. The British authorities are assuming organized human smuggling, as was the case almost 20 years ago.

When the rental cover hits the wrong people: Many are happy that the Berlin policy against rent sharks proceeds. But what about landlords who have always behaved decently? Two examples.

My evening: the recommendations for your end of workday

What you could leaf through: in the new Asterix, Volume 38, "The Daughter of Vercingetorix". But if you ask my colleague Timur Vermes, then you should rather watch the band rather quickly, because he is "a low point" and "no, that has nothing to do with Asterix," says Vermes. Lots of traditions being thrown overboard, no sense of humor, no potential for conflict. Asterix, a disappointment? How can that be? The criticism is here.

20th Century Fox

In the new "Terminator" Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) fights again on Arnold Schwarzenegger's side

What you might look at: the new "Terminator", Part Six, "Dark Fate". It's a bit like Asterix - the old heroes (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton), the old conflicts (killer robots following killer robots), confusion in the plot. But this new edition is still not the worst, as my colleague Philipp Schwarz says. Can you look, he thinks. For criticism.

I wish you a nice finishing time.

warmly
