The EU states have agreed in principle to agree to a time extension for the Brexit. However, the ambassadors of the member states have not been able to agree on a new date for the resignation of Great Britain.

The ambassadors of the EU states advised on Friday morning about a renewed postponement of the Brexit date. The "constructive" meeting had "full agreement" that the deadline for Britain's withdrawal should be extended for the third time, EU sources said.

The ambassadors were also agreed that the decision should be taken by written procedure if possible. Another special summit of heads of state and government would no longer be necessary. Over the weekend, the deliberations should continue; a final agreement is expected on Monday or Tuesday.

The British House of Commons had by law obliged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to request an extension in Brussels until 31 January, should Parliament not ratify in time the withdrawal agreement negotiated with the EU. According to diplomats, however, the French government is working on a shorter extension, while the majority of other member countries, including Germany, are on 31 January as a new Brexit date.
