Debate on UN protection zone: Seehofer supports Kramp-Karrenbauers Syria push

2019-10-25T11:04:52.963Z

"It is migration and security policy in the German interest": Interior Minister Horst Seehofer defended CDU chief Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer in the SPIEGEL against their critics.

Interior Minister and ex-CSU leader Horst Seehofer assessed the proposal of an international protection zone in northern Syria positively: "I support the initiative of the Minister of Defense," said Seehofer the SPIEGEL.

At the beginning of the week, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer surprisingly had proposed an international protection zone for northern Syria, not with international allies or in the governing coalition. In addition to support, she also had to take a lot of criticism and even malice for it.

Seehofer now told the SPIEGEL that it was "in the interests of migration and security in German and European interests" to stabilize Syria: "I am thinking in particular of the millions of Syrian refugees who are in or in front of the doors of Turkey."

Stability and security in the region are "urgently needed to avoid additional fleeing and migration movements". The Minister of the Interior also does not see it as unusual in political business for party chairpersons to place proposals unspoken. "If you want to make a difference in politics, you have to throw a stone into the water," Seehofer said. "The CDU chairman did nothing else."
