The turnout in Thuringia is as high as it has not been for a long time - the AfD in particular benefits from this. Even the left convinced tens of thousands of non-voters, while the CDU loses right and left. The analysis.

For Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow and The Left, it was a successful evening. According to projections, the party comes to 31.0 percent - a record result. For the first time she is the strongest force in a federal state.

Ramelow spoke of a clear government mandate for his party, which he would "accept". Alone: The formation of a government should be complicated according to the current state.

Who won votes from the competition, who convinced non-voters? The overview.

The Left was able to mobilize 47,000 former non-voters. In addition, they chased the CDU 19,000 votes. This emerges from an analysis of the preliminary voter migration of Infratest dimap for ARD (as of 20.30 on election day). The party also took away votes from its coalition partners: 17,000 from the SPD and 8,000 from the Greens.

Landtag election Thuringia

Voter turnout was the highest in 25 years. Around 65 percent of eligible voters cast their votes - more than twelve percentage points more than five years ago.

Even more than the Left, the AfD profited from this: It mobilized around 77,000 non-voters and also took away votes from all the other parties that had previously represented in the state parliament: most of them the CDU (36,000) and the left (17,000). In addition, 7000 citizens who had previously voted for the SPD, as well as 1,000 former Green voters elected the AfD. Also 15,000 former voters of other parties voted for the right-wing populists.

The CDU lost not only to the AFD votes, but also to the Left Party (20,000) and the Greens (5,000). The Christian Democrats mobilized 31,000 non-voters. The SPD convinced 13,000 previous non-voters. However, the Social Democrats also lost to Left, CDU and AfD. The Greens chased the CDU the most votes (5000). They also mobilized 3000 non-voters. In addition to the Left and the AfD, the party also lost to parties not yet represented in the state parliament: 2000 votes.

The analysis of the preliminary voter migration of Infratest dimap to the ARD did not feature separate values for the FDP on election night. The Liberals were not represented in the Thuringian state parliament in the past legislative period.

Interesting is the view on the voting behavior in different age groups . For voters under 25 years, the AfD was ahead: In this group, she won 23 percent of the vote. She was just ahead of the left (22 percent). The CDU got here 15 percent of the vote, the Greens 14 percent. The Liberals came to seven, the SPD to five percent. In all other age groups under 60, the AfD was also ahead.

Only in the electorate group "60 and older" was the Left Party with 38 percent of the vote clear number one. It was well ahead of the Union (25 percent), the AfD (18 percent) and the SPD (eleven percent). The FDP won four, the Greens three percent in voters over 60.

Looking at the voting behavior of women and men , there is a conspicuous feature that has already been observed in the general election in 2017 and in other state elections: the AfDs vote for significantly more men (29 percent) than women (18 percent).

For all other parties, the gender balance is much more balanced. The FDP gets five percent of the vote among both women and men. Left, CDU, SPD and Greens all achieved a slightly better result among women.

Education shows a discrepancy, especially among the AfD and the Greens. The AfD is gaining 27 percent for voters with a simple level of education, and those with a high level of 16 percent. The Greens get in the former group three percent of the vote, nine percent in the latter.

The FDP also has more votes (six percent) among high-educated voters than low-educated voters (two percent). The relationship is much more balanced for the Left, the Christian and the Social Democrats.
