(CNN) - A man in his 50s who was trapped in a 90-meter chimney in Carlisle was confirmed dead, police said in a statement Monday.
"The paramedics declared that the man, in his 50s and Carlisle, had died at the place around 4.45 pm," said the Cumbria police statement.
"The police can confirm that a man who was trapped at the height of the Dixon chimney in Carlisle and then recovered during a multi-agency operation was confirmed dead," says the statement from the authorities.
"The highly complex rescue operation has involved agencies such as the police, the fire and rescue services of Cumbria and Lancashire, the Northwest Ambulance Service, the Coast Guard, mountain rescuers and specialized contractors," they added.
The images on social networks showed the man with a naked torso and hanging from his legs.
It is not clear how or why the man was trapped at the top of the chimney, which is part of an old cotton mill of the nineteenth century.
"A helicopter was used to try to rescue the man and efforts have been made to try to descend a technical rescue team into the chimney to rescue him," Cumbria police superintendent Matt Kennerley said in a statement.
Shouts and cries were heard from the chimney before the police arrived, according to the PA Media news agency.
Police closed the roads around the chimney and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.
