(CNN Spanish) - The United States government announced on Monday the decision to extend one more year the permit to live and work without risk of being deported, which grants the Temporary Protected Status or TPS for more than 250,000 Salvadorans English.

In a video released on the Twitter account of President Nayib Bukele, the US ambassador to El Salvador, Ronald Johnson, says the extension "is a recognition of the government's achievements and good work."

For his part, the Salvadoran president thanked the decision and considered that the extension of the TPS will give “additional time to seek a permanent solution” for Salvadorans who have lived with that permit since 2001 in the United States.

The signing of the TPS extension took place on Monday in Washington between the interim secretary of National Security of the United States, Kevin McAleenan, and the chancellor of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco.

The permit expired last September but by order of a United States Federal Court, the United States Department of Homeland Security extended it provisionally until January 2, 2020.

The Court admitted a lawsuit to study President Donald Trump's reasons for canceling the TPS to El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Sudan.

Last September, Bukele met in New York with his US counterpart, Donald Trump.

That meeting, in which Bukele advocated for Salvadorans covered by the TPS, occurred only days after El Salvador and the United States signed an agreement that establishes a new procedure for the asylum application.
