Thuringia Election: CDU excludes coalition with the left yet

2019-10-28T20:44:06.841Z

At first, CDU lead candidate Mike Mohring flirted with the left, later he backed down: a coalition "closes".

The formation of a government after the state election in Thuringia could be cumbersome - also because the CDU has rejected its indicated willingness to compromise with the left again. On Monday night, the Christian Democrats issued a press release entitled "No Coalition with Left or AfD".

After a first analysis and evaluation of the state parliament election applies for the CDU in Thuringia the same as before the choice, it said. "I can not imagine a situation that the reluctant red-red-green state government is lifted by the support of the CDU in a new government responsibility," was quoted leading candidate Mike Mohring. "That concludes."

Mohring did not want to exclude talks

A few hours earlier Mohring had sounded quite different. In the ARD "morning magazine" he said to the question of a possible coalition between the left and the CDU, his party was ready for responsibility, but still had to fathom what this is called Thuringia. "For me, stable conditions are more important to the state than just party-political interests," said Mohring in the morning. He does not want to refuse an offer of talks from the outset.

In its press release, the CDU again referred to the decision of the CDU Germany and Thuringia, not to coalition with the AfD and the left. Mohring still wants to meet with Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow, but from "political responsibility" as it was called. The CDU criticized a possible left-leaning government without legitimacy in office. "It is not our job to provide this legitimacy."

According to the current state of the count, the Left has won 31.0 percent of the votes, but would no longer have a majority with the old coalition partners SPD and the Greens. However, a left-wing government and CDU (21.8 percent) have more than 50 percent of the vote.

The executive state executive of the Left was commissioned on Monday evening to hold talks with all parties represented in the state parliament except the AfD "to explore the possibility for a stable government in Thuringia," the party said.
