(CNN Spanish) - The Mexican Attorney General’s Office said in a statement Tuesday that United Kingdom authorities arrested Karime Macías in London, wife of the former governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte, for an arrest warrant for extradition purposes against him.

In a statement to local media in Mexico, Macías’s lawyer, Marco Antonio del Toro, said Macías volunteered during a hearing.

CNN is trying to contact del Toro for more details.

The Attorney General of the State of Veracruz, in Mexico, issued an arrest warrant in May 2018 against Macías. Former Governor Javier Duarte is linked to prosecution for various crimes of the common law and the federal jurisdiction.

According to a report by the Prosecutor's Office at that time, prosecutor Jorge Winckler Ortiz reported that the body in charge "detected through investigation, a probable property damage to the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) of the State of Veracruz, by amount exceeding about 5.7 million dollars, under the administration of Karime Macías Tubilla and / or Karime Macías de Duarte ”.

Lawyers of the Duarte family described the legal actions against Duarte and his family as "disguised electoral political attacks." They added that "we commit ourselves to attend the citations and / or notifications and necessary procedures where the presence of Macías is required".

Javier Duarte, former governor of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, was sentenced to 9 years in prison after pleading guilty to crimes of criminal association and money laundering, according to judicial sources. Duarte, arrested on April 15, 2017, had escaped to Guatemala before completing his term as governor.
