2019-10-29T15:25:43.463Z

Government forces and units of the pro-Russian rebels withdraw from the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk. The move is to initiate diplomatic talks.

Already in 2016, a withdrawal from eastern Ukraine was agreed, but until today it has not been implemented: now comes again movement in the peace process. The conflicting parties in the Luhansk region have begun another withdrawal of troops. Both the army and the pro-Russian separatists fired white and green signal rockets near the village of Solote on the front line, as the Ukrainian army and the separatists confirmed.

With this they agreed to withdraw their troops with equipment about a kilometer from the front line. The process, called "unbundling," is monitored by observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE). Already in June the troops of both sides withdrew in the village Stanyzja Luhanska.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky had gone to Solote. Nationalists had threatened to occupy army positions with armed volunteers in case of withdrawal.

Conflict has claimed just under 13,000 deaths in the past five years

The Ukraine conflict, which has been ongoing since 2014, faces Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russian fighters in the east of the country. Almost 13,000 people were killed in the course of the fighting. Scattered battles in the region had repeatedly led to a shift in the deduction. Many war veterans in Kiev who fought against the pro-Russian rebels are against withdrawal.

Germany and France have been trying for years to mediate between the two sides. A withdrawal of troops from the Solote region as well as from two other sectors of the front line was made a condition for Russia to participate in a new summit meeting in the so-called Normandie format. The Normandy format involves Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany.
