She had just been awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize and now the next award for Greta Thunberg has begun. The Swedish climate activist was awarded the environmental prize of the Nordic Council - and immediately rejected it.
It received the prize for mobilizing millions of people around the world to demand political action for the climate at a critical time, the council said Tuesday evening at a solemn ceremony in Stockholm. Shortly thereafter, the 16-year-old said she had decided to reject the price.
She thanked the Nordic Council for the award, which was a great honor, wrote Thunberg on Instagram. However, the climate movement does not need any further awards, but politicians who listen to the findings of science. Two representatives of the climate movement Fridays for Future said at the ceremony on behalf of Thunberg, the Scandinavian countries were among the states that could do the most for the climate, but in principle do nothing.
Sweden had co-nominated the Swede
The Nordic Council is the central forum of the Scandinavian region. Its members include apart from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland also the largely independent territories Åland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands
Every year, the Council awards prizes in the categories of literature, children's and young adult literature, film, music and the environment. Each of the awards is endowed with 350,000 Danish kroner (around 47,000 euros). Thunberg had been nominated by the countries of Sweden and Norway for the environmental award. She has been in North America for two months.
