Criticism of leadership discussion of the Union: "Personnel debates only distract"

2019-10-30T15:58:44.236Z

The poor performance of the Union in Thuringia has rekindled the debate over the party leadership. The EU parliamentary group vice presidents Andreas Jung and Nadine Schön now warn of the consequences of such a discussion.

Shortly after the election defeat in Thuringia, the CDU faces a new personnel debate - but not all in the party this is convenient. The deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, for example, Andreas Jung, criticized the recent leadership discussion.

"A personnel debate due to the election in Thuringia diametrically contradicts the expectation of citizens to us," said the CDU politician to the SPIEGEL. "In the polls there criticized an overly large majority, in the CDU go it just as much as the SPD to the staff."

Jung, a member of the Baden-Wuerttemberg CDU, also defended the work of the Grand Coalition and thus also Chancellor Angela Merkel. "As a lesson, therefore, we should focus on solid work and good mediation on the second half instead of giving the impression that it is now more about the next election and people than about content and positions," said Jung the SPIEGEL.

Brok brings CSU Chancellor into the game

Also Nadine Schön, also Union Fraction vice, criticized the renewed staff debate. Personnel and management questions were clarified last year, said the member of parliament from the Saarland. "The parliamentary and European elections have shown that there is dissatisfaction and serious concerns in the German population and, unfortunately, a split in the country," Schön continued. To bring this together, to solve the problems of the people and to develop above all a positive vision for the future of our country, is the task of the party. "Staff debates only distract and waste time and energy and are therefore unnecessary."

Recently, CDU board member Elmar Brok had sparked the discussion when he suggested that the next chancellor candidate of the Union might be set up by the CSU.

Merz had initiated the discussion

The former Union faction leader Friedrich Merz had rated the Thuringian election result as a "great vote of no confidence" against the grand coalition in Berlin. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who misses "political leadership and clear statements", was the main focus of the criticism, he said on ZDF television on Monday. Several politicians from the ranks of the Union and FDP joined this criticism, including Hesse ex-Prime Minister Roland Koch.

Likewise the head of the conservative CDU group value union, Alexander Mitsch. "At the grassroots level of the Union there is a great deal of relief that what many occupy is now openly expressed by Mr Merz, and all that matters now is how and how quickly this spirit of change really leads to a change in the Chancellery. says Mitsch.

Others want to avoid a discussion about people. Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther jumped to the Chancellor with clear words to the side.

The North Rhine-Westphalian labor minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) spoke of a "debate at an inopportune time". "Those who want to call a decision today, lead sham laws, which only harm the CDU," he told the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger".
