(CNN) - Former US Vice President Joe Biden was not allowed to commune this Sunday in a Catholic church in South Carolina for his support of the right to abortion.

Father Robert Morey, of the Saint Anthony Catholic Church in the city of Florence, told the Florence Morning News that he had denied Biden communion because “any public figure defending abortion puts itself out of the teaching of church".

“Holy Communion symbolizes that we are one with God, with each other and with the Church. Our actions should reflect that, ”Morey said in an email sent to the newspaper. He added that “as a priest, it is my responsibility to serve the souls entrusted to my care, and I must do so even in the most difficult situations. I will keep Mr. Biden in my prayers. ”

Morey did not immediately respond to the request for comments made by CNN on Tuesday. Biden declined to talk about the matter on MSNBC. “I will not discuss that. It is my personal life, ”he said.

Biden has mentioned that he would seek to work on the Roe vs. case. Wade, the historic decision of the Supreme Court that established abortion rights across the country, a measure that could protect that right from the growing legal challenges in Republican-led states.

He has also said that he would try to eliminate the Hyde Amendment, a law that prohibits federal funds from going to pay for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is in danger. Biden previously supported the amendment, but reversed his position earlier this year amid criticism from his Democratic presidential rivals for the 2020 election race.

During the 2012 vice-presidential debate, Biden said he personally opposes abortion.

"I simply refuse to impose that on others, unlike my friend here," Biden said, referring to the then Republican candidate for Vice President Paul Ryan. “I don't think we have the right to tell women that they can't control their body. It's a decision between them and their doctor, ”he completed.

Other presidential candidates and vice presidential Catholic Democrats have also been denied communion for their support for abortion rights multiple times in recent decades, sometimes exposing deep cultural divisions between conservative and moderate Catholics in the church hierarchy.

In 2004, Cardinal Raymond Burke, former archbishop of St. Louis, said he would not allow communion to Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. He pointed out that in his view, very controversial at that time, the sacrament must protect itself from someone "who knows that he or she is unworthy and yet presumes to present himself and take the Holy Eucharist."

In 2008, Bishop Joseph Francis Martino of Biden's hometown of Scranton, Pa., Said that the Democrat would be denied communion in the city diocese for his support of abortion rights.

In 2016, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, then a candidate for the Democratic Vice Presidency, faced criticism from individual priests about their positions on abortion, same-sex marriage and gender equality.
