(CNN) - A Florida surfer rode the waves on Sunday at New Smyrna Beach when he received a good bite of reality.

Stephen Michelena, 32, was surfing in approximately 1.4 meters of water when he jumped off his board and landed on a shark, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, on the Atlantic coast of Florida.

According to the rescue team, the shark bit the surfer's foot once and left.

Michelena refused to be transported to the hospital and was treated on the beach for minor injuries to her left foot.
