WASHINGTON - The US House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a resolution to launch a public inquiry into the removal of US President Donald Trump.
The Associated Press said the House voted 232 to 196 in favor of the resolution, which was opposed by all Republican members of the House, the first official vote of the Council in a battle that could extend until the presidential elections in 2020.
The vote set rules for lawmakers to move from weeks of closed-door interviews with witnesses to public hearings and ultimately to determine possible votes on whether to recommend Trump's removal, the agency said.
Democrats spoke at the session about the lawmakers' duty to defend the constitution, while Republicans saw the process as an attempt to derail the railway.
Democrats have come under increasing pressure in recent weeks to begin the process of impeaching and isolating Trump after he admitted to contacts with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelinsky over former US Vice President Joe Biden, the most likely to win the Democratic nomination for the next US presidential election, which the Democrats considered a threat to US national security.
According to Democrats, Trump has asked Zelensky to open an investigation into corruption charges for Biden's son in Ukraine in order to tarnish the image of the latter and influence his possible campaign if he wins the Democratic nomination to compete with Trump in the 2020 elections.
