(CNN) - Four people were arrested after allegedly trying to introduce 400 kilograms (880 lb) of methamphetamine into Australia in hundreds of bottles of Sriracha brand hot sauce.

The boxes, which were shipped by cargo from the United States to Sydney, were declared as containing bottles of chili sauce, Australian New South Wales (NSW) police said in a statement Thursday.

But tests conducted by the Australian Border Force earlier this month found that the bottles contained large amounts of methamphetamine, which has an estimated potential value of more than 300 million Australian dollars (208 million dollars). In Australia, street drugs are known colloquially as "ice."

"This has been a complex investigation and we know that the methylamphetamine in this import was headed to a clandestine laboratory in the Sydney metropolitan area for the extraction process to take place," state crime commander Stuart Smith said in a statement, using a Alternative term for methamphetamine.

Sriracha is a popular hot sauce that has earned a cult worldwide.

Earlier this month, police arrested three 30-year-old men for the alleged methamphetamine smuggling. This Thursday morning, police arrested a fourth suspect, a 45-year-old man.

Police said the four men were key members of the network, but they are still investigating to find other people linked to the criminal union.

“This screening should serve as a warning to criminal groups that no matter how smart you think you are in the way you try to hide and move your drugs, our officers have the skills, technology and resources to find and track them up to people trying to bring them, ”said Matt O'Connor, the interim regional commander of the Australian Border Force for NSW.

It is not the first time that smugglers have been arrested trying to introduce drugs into Australia in surprising objects. In the past, Australian police also confiscated drugs hidden in snow globes and stereo speakers.
