Cauca murdered escort of the National Protection Unit

(CNNEspañol) - In a troubled week of murders in Cauca, in southwest Colombia, the National Protection Unit said Saturday that an escort was killed by alleged FARC dissidents.

"He was murdered in Suárez, Cauca, fellow Fabian Eduardo Rivera, who was part of the security scheme of Mr. Bernardo Ciclos," tweeted this Saturday the National Protection Unit, the national government entity in charge of the security of people or groups vulnerable who are threatened by violence.

Bernardo Ciclos is an indigenous leader from Cauca, according to CableNoticias, a CNN affiliate in Spanish in Colombia.

Hours earlier, the UNP reported that the escort had been kidnapped in that municipality and demanded that the kidnappers release him, because "he only did his job: defend and protect a life."

The security agency said the murder was committed by alleged FARC dissidents.

“With indignation, and even with rage, I reject the vile murder of our partner Fabian Eduardo Rivera. He was visiting his girlfriend. To her, her family and friends a hug. The violent will not beat us, ”said Pablo Elías González, director of the UNP, on Twitter.

This week the department of Cauca has been the scene of a violent onslaught against the natives.

First was the shooting murder of five indigenous people in Tacueyó, Toribío area, when on Tuesday they would have tried to prevent the entry of armed groups into their territory. Two days later, the murder of four people who were surveying in Corinth and, in a different event, the discovery of a corpse in the Huasanó district was known.

Colombian President Iván Duque said Saturday that behind the "tragedy" that has been seen in recent days in Cauca are drug traffickers and dissident criminal structures.

"Our duty is to protect all Colombians always including the indigenous communities of our country and you can be clear that in Cauca that is the desire," said Duke from the city of Armenia on Saturday.

"Drug trafficking has always been an enemy of institutionality, of prosperity, of coexistence, and we Colombians cannot have folds because to confront drug trafficking we must all go together as a society," he added.

The president said on Saturday that he would face "the criminals" and "bandits" of Cauca "with the public force but also with the support of all Colombian society."

Colombian Defense Minister Guillermo Botero said that in December, 2,500 members of the Public Force will arrive in the region to attack the criminal groups.
