(CNN) - A 15-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder for shooting 7-year-old girl when he went out to ask for candy on Halloween, according to police.

The teenager is expected to appear in court on Saturday to face two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault in the shooting, as he also left an injured man.

The girl, who was dressed as a bumblebee, was asking for candy with her family at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Little Village neighborhood when a group of men chasing another began shooting, she told reporters Chicago police sergeant, Rocco Alioto.

The girl was shot in the lower neck, police said, and is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.

A 31-year-old man was also shot in the incident. He is in stable condition after being transported to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound in his left hand, police said. There is no relationship between the victims, police said.

The girl is "fighting for her life," Alioto said Thursday.

"This is unacceptable. She is a 7-year-old girl who is asking for candy with her family and is shot because a group of men wants to shoot another man while there is a street full of children playing, ”said Alioto.

Police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute between two gangs and that several criminals are involved, but the police do not have an exact number, said Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. The attacker wore a "Jason" mask from the movie "Friday the 13th," he said.

Detectives recovered a firearm that could be related to the shooting, said Chicago Police Chief Anthony Guglielmi via Twitter.

Johnson called the shooting "reprehensible" during a press conference on Friday, said those behind him are "cowards" and announced historical lows in the number of homicides and shootings during October in the city.

"None of that matters if parents living in certain communities can't even take their children out on Halloween," he said.
