(CNN) - US President Donald Trump was greeted with strong and sustained boos and some cheers as he entered Madison Square Garden for the Ultimate Fighting Championship fight on Saturday night in New York.

The president, who faces a political trial investigation led by House of Representatives Democrats, attended with Republican Party leader Kevin McCarthy, North Carolina representative Mark Meadows, New York representative Peter King and his two sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.

A handful of signs that said "Eliminate Trump" and "Accuses Trump" splashed in the crowd.

Trump received an equally polarized reception days before when he attended a World Series baseball game in Washington, DC. He was greeted with strong boos, cheers and “lock him up” songs when he appeared on the Nationals Park stadium video screen.

The negative reception was not particularly surprising in Washington, predominantly liberal, but it came the same day that Trump announced that the United States killed the founder of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the world's most wanted terrorist.

This is Trump's first trip to his home state after claiming that his Florida resort is now the president's "predominant and main home."

Since taking office, he has spent 99 days at his Mar-a-Lago club compared to just 20 days at Trump Tower in New York City, according to the CNN count. That makes his time in Florida five times greater than his time in New York.

Outside the scene, protesters against and in support of Trump met and chanted.

Sunsara Taylor, a member of an organization called Refuse Fascism, told CNN that it was part of a movement made up of “various political perspectives that agree that the Trump / Pence administration represents a threat to all of us. Our goal is to get them out through mass nonviolent protests. ”

But Sophia Rotunno, of Staten Island, New York, told CNN she was a registered Republican and supports the president.

"I am proud to be an American, and our president loves the United States and I am also here to express our right to the First Amendment," Rotunno said.

CNN's Mirna Alsharif contributed to this report.
