(CNN Spanish) - A court in Mexico granted the appeal for amparo to the former governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte, which leaves his connection to trial and preventive detention for the crime of peculation without effect and includes the precautionary measure of justified preventive detention, imposed by the attorney general of the state of Veracruz.

The Veracruz prosecutor's office investigates and accuses Duarte of the diversion of 220 million Mexican pesos, approximately US $ 11 million, from the public treasury. In an interview with Televisa, an affiliate of CNN, Duarte said that no accusation about diversion of resources was fundamental.
However, Duarte was sentenced in September 2018 to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to two other crimes: criminal association and money laundering.
