(CNN) - After his mother was shot in an ambush near the U.S.-Mexico border, a 13-year-old boy hid his brothers and walked for about six hours to get help, his family said.
Devin Blake Langford hid six of his brothers in bushes and covered them with branches to "keep them safe while seeking help," family member Kendra Lee Miller wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday.
The boy's mother, Dawna Ray Langford, was driving one of the three vehicles that were part of an apparent ambush that left nine women and children dead in the Mexican state of Sonora on Monday.
Dawna Langford and the other two mothers drove each of the three vehicles. They were killed along with four small children and two babies, said Alex LeBarón, a relative.

After seeing his mother and two brothers die, Devin walked approximately 22 km to La Mora and conveyed the "first news someone had heard" about the attack, Miller said.
“Devin's uncles armed themselves with guns and returned to try to find the hidden children, knowing that many of them were injured. They didn't get very far before they realized they were in danger of dying, as there were continuous shooting for hours in the mountains near La Mora, ”Miller wrote.
Another family member, Tiffany Langford, confirmed Miller's version of Devin's trip for help.
Five of the six children that Devin hid were taken to a local hospital and then transferred to the United States. The sixth girl, Devin's 9-year-old sister, disappeared after she left in a second attempt to get help.
Family members and Mexican soldiers found the girl after searching the area for approximately two hours, Miller said.
Investigators believe that the three vehicles were ambushed by criminal groups. Mexican Security Minister Alfonso Durazo said the attack could have been a case of mistaken identity of "groups in conflict in the area."
The victims are part of a Mormon community of approximately 3,000 members living in Mexico.
