Homs province is one of the most important areas of chestnut cultivation and production is characterized by abundance this year compared to previous years and according to the Directorate of Agriculture Homs is expected to produce more than eight tons.

Engineer Ahmed Rahal, head of Dahr Al-Quseir Forestry site, said in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that there are six sites of good quality chestnut trees collected by specialized workshops. A chestnut tree of different ages, most of which has entered the stage of maturity and fruiting.

Rahal pointed out that the expected amount of production for this year is more than 8 tons and could reach 10 tons, pointing out that the process of collecting fruits is through the private sector through a tender announced annually and the harvest period will be prolonged due to the late arrival of cold air depressions.

Concerning the care of chestnut trees, Rahal explained that the chestnut trees in Dahr El-Quseir were left to environmental factors so that they are resistant to all conditions and our intervention is limited to the forest in order to protect them from encroachments and unfair cutting. Sanaa Hammoud, a forestry monitor in Dahr al-Quseir, pointed out that this year's chestnut crop is excellent compared to previous years. In terms of quantity and quality pointing out that the workshops of the management and organization of forests to take care of trees and preserve and patching areas damaged by weather conditions or human encroachments on them and is planting new grass in addition to the removal of trees and branches damaged and broken.

Hamoud pointed out that the importance of the site Dahr al-Qusayr forestry comes from containing a large number of chestnut trees of high economic value because of the solid wood used in the fields of construction and paper and ships in addition to the importance of fruit chestnut as food.

It is noteworthy that the site of Dahr al-Qusair in the western countryside of Homs is one of the largest and most important sites for planting chestnut trees at the level of the country and began planting forty years ago.
