The death toll from the attack on a convoy transporting employees of the Canadian mining company Semafo in Burkina Faso has risen to 37, with dozens injured.
The governor of the eastern region of Burkina Faso, Colonel Saido Sanou, said in a statement last night that 37 people were killed and 60 wounded in the attack by unidentified gunmen yesterday.
A previous death toll had indicated 10 people were killed, scores injured and dozens missing in the attack.
The Montreal-based company Semafo said in a statement that the attack targeted a convoy of five buses carrying workers, contractors and suppliers associated with the company and was traveling with military escorts.
Burkina Faso has been the scene of frequent attacks by the spread of armed groups affiliated with the Islamic State and al-Qaeda terrorists near its border, which has killed more than 630 people across the country for four years while some 500,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
