(CNN) - Lafe Langford's face freezes in disbelief after nine of his relatives were killed.

MIRA: Durazo: Weapons used in the LeBarón family massacre are American

Two days have passed since armed men ambushed a convoy of mothers and children in northern Mexico, killing three women and six of their children.

Now, he learns that two of the children who survived the attack walked for hours trying to get help.

"Many details are still emerging," Langford told CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday. "We have been knowing many facts and incredible truths and stories of the survivors as they recover in the hospitals."

The nine victims killed, who had dual US-Mexican citizenship, were members of a Mormon community that appeared to be fundamentalist. The community is separated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This Monday, the three mothers were driving in a caravan as a protection while they went to see other family members.

"Suddenly, the bullets rained from above, from the top of a hill, on top of them," Langford said. “The mothers were dead. There were seven injured children who were alive. ”

According to the young survivors, "once the shooting stopped, these men left the mountain and took out all these children who were still alive," said Langford.

“Basically they were told to get out of here. Then they immediately started walking home, ”taking turns taking a child who was seriously injured.

He marveled at the "heroic actions" of the children who tried to help each other in the remote mountainous area near the Sonora-Chihuahua border.

It is difficult to process "the loneliness they felt in those mountains for hours and hours, all shot and wounded, charging in their arms," Langford said.

Devin Blake Langford, 13, saw his mother and two brothers die.

"What Devin has told us is that one of the three vehicles was hit and then burned," said Lafe Langford.

Devin hid six of his brothers in bushes and covered them with branches to "keep them safe while seeking help," another relative, Kendra Lee Miller, wrote on Facebook.

At dusk, McKenzie Langford, 9, who was shot in the wrist, worried about Devin and said, "I have to go get him," said Lafe Langford.

“He had a bullet in his wrist, but nevertheless, he was probably in the best way to walk at that point. And so it went, ”said Langford.

“And we found her by her small footprints. He took the wrong path. Six hours later, we saw that his footprints had a shoe, and then a bare foot because he had to take off his shoes and his feet were swollen and covered with blisters when they found it at 9:30 at night. ”

But McKenzie did not complain about his injuries.

“The first thing that came out of his mouth when he saw his uncles was: 'We have to go back. We have to go back. My brothers, my brothers and sisters are dying. They are bleeding, they were shot. We have to go rescue them. And that's all that mattered to him, ”said Langford.

"What happened, what they experienced, we don't have the ability to imagine what these children went through."

Ray Sanchez of CNN contributed to this report.
