The EU's counter-terrorism coordinator, Gilles de Kirchhoff, has revealed that large quantities of looted antiquities by terrorist organizations in Syria and Iraq are hidden pending sale later.
"I am convinced that much of what has been stolen during the Islamic State (IS )'s control is still stored in the vicinity of Syria and Iraq," said de Kirchhoff.
De Kerchove asserted that the Islamic State terrorist organization, as part of its propaganda campaigns, was destroying archaeological sites while actually selling licenses for archaeological excavations and looting antiquities.
Addressing the smuggling of antiquities is a difficult task, de Kerchove said, adding that many of those who buy these pieces do not realize that they finance terrorism.
Many cities, archaeological sites and museums in Syria have been subjected to systematic sabotage, illegal excavations and theft by terrorist organizations that transport them abroad and sell them illegally in Turkey, Europe and Asia, especially as these organizations execute foreign agendas to expose them with their sponsors and supporters and reveal the size of Terrorism that has been subjected to human heritage in the land of the mother of civilizations.
