A Brazilian judge on Tuesday authorized the release of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who was jailed after a decision by the Brazilian Supreme Court.
"There is no longer any basis to carry out the sentence because of the Supreme Court's decision to put an end to a jurisprudence that would allow imprisonment with the first appeal, even if all appeals have not been exhausted," the judge told AFP on the release.
Lula da Silva, 74, will be released after more than a year and a half of his imprisonment in Curitiba in the south of the country.
Lula was arrested in April 2018 and is serving an eight-year and 10-month prison sentence on alleged corruption charges while the former Brazilian president insists he is innocent.
