(CNN) - A New York state judge ordered US President Donald Trump to pay two million dollars to several nonprofit organizations to resolve a civil lawsuit filed by the state attorney’s office that says the Trump Foundation illegally coordinated with the 2016 presidential campaign.

In her decision presented Thursday, Judge Saliann Scarpulla said that "Mr. Trump breached his fiduciary duty with the foundation", having "allowed his campaign to orchestrate" a televised fundraising event apparently for the foundation in Des Moines, Iowa, in January 2016 and then let the money obtained be distributed by the campaign to promote it.

However, the ruling did not impose any of the sanctions sought by the New York attorney general's office: the ban on Trump and his children from belonging to the board of directors of any other non-profit organization in New York and that the President will pay punitive damages.

The court order and the agreement put an end to the doubts that initially arose during the 2016 campaign about whether Trump used the money raised under the guise of charitable work with the objective of obtaining political gains. The ruling leaves the president in the unusual position of having to pay millions in damages while in office, just at a time when he faces a lot of other personal legal battles.

Filed in June 2018, the lawsuit argued that the president and his three oldest children - Don Jr., Ivanka and Eric - violated federal and state campaign finance laws and abused the tax-exempt state of the Donald J. Trump Foundation . According to the appeal, the Trump allowed the foundation to be used "as little more than a checkbook to serve Trump's political and commercial interests."

The New York attorney general's office had sought several penalties, including $ 2.8 million in restitution, plus fines. Trump himself had promised to fight the lawsuit, tweeting last year: "I will not resolve this case with an agreement!"

But attorneys on both sides reached a “consensual resolution of most of this procedure” in October, the judge said in her decision, and agreed that the court ruling would determine the amount of damages Trump would have to pay.

The agreement comes after an agreement of the foundation in December to be dissolved under judicial supervision.

"The court's decision, along with the agreements we negotiate, are a great victory in our efforts to protect charitable assets and hold those who abuse charities for personal gain," said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a statement. "My office will continue to fight for accountability because nobody is above the law, not a businessman, not a candidate for a position, not even the president of the United States," he added.

As part of the agreement, Trump also agreed to reimburse the foundation for $ 11,525 for the payment of items for an auction of a charity event and meet certain restrictions if he wishes to join the board of another non-profit organization in New York. These restrictions include that the majority of the members of the board of directors of the charity are not members of the Trump family or have any business relationship with him, his companies or any company owned by his relatives.

The list of organizations that the judge approved to receive Trump's two million dollars includes Army Emergency Relief, Children's Aid Society, City Meals-on-Wheels, Give an Hour, Martha's Table, United Negro College Fund, United Way of Capital Area and Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Those organizations will also receive equal portions of the organization's remaining liquid assets, which total approximately $ 1.8 million, according to the judge's order.

"We are pleased that the court, by rejecting the frivolous request of the attorney general on legal fines, interests and other damages, acknowledged that every penny raised by the Trump Foundation has gone to help those most in need," said the lawyers of the foundation , Alan Futerfas and Marc Mukasey. "Now that this matter is over, the Trump Foundation is proud to make this additional contribution," they said.

As they did previously in the case, Trump's lawyers also referred to the lawsuit this Thursday as "politically motivated," an accusation that the attorney general's office has disputed.
