German Chancellor Angela Merkel today urged Europe to defend its values.
"The values of Europe must always be defended. In the future we must pledge democracy, freedom, human rights and tolerance," Merkel said in a speech at the Church of Reconciliation, one of the places where the city is divided.
The commemoration of the fall of the wall comes in an atmosphere characterized by differences between Cold War allies, where no senior Western leaders came to Berlin to participate in the commemoration.
Two days before the anniversary, French President Emmanuel Macron launched an uneasy stance by saying that NATO was in a "clinical death" and expressed particular dissatisfaction with the lack of coordination between the United States and NATO partners and the unilateral behavior adopted by the Turkish regime in launching an aggression on Syrian territory.
Adding to the differences between Cold War allies is also an international climate and thorny issues that Europe seems unable to bear.
