On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on Germans to tear down their self-erected walls. In recent years, across the country new walls have emerged: "walls of frustration, walls of anger and hatred, walls of speechlessness and alienation," said the President in front of tens of thousands of people at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. "Let's break down those walls".

Everyone can do something for cohesion in the country, appealed the Federal President. He hopes that "we can bring some of the courage, confidence and self-confidence of those days of the fall of the Berlin Wall into our time today".

Tens of thousands of visitors came to the Brandenburg Gate for the stage show with performances, light installations and numerous musicians and bands. In his speech, the Federal President also paid tribute to the contribution of the people of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Steinmeier thanked the former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who initiated a policy of détente, and former US President Ronald Reagan as representative of the "strong arm from the West".
