(CNN Spanish) - Unquestionably 2019 has been - and is being - an excellent year in the United States for plant-based food products, which seek to reduce their use of animal products.
Although 95% of the population of the country routinely consume food products that come from animals, vegetarian consumers, vegans and now the "Flexitarians" are increasingly gaining more ground.
According to a recent study by Nielsen, in this country 62% of the population would be willing to reduce their meat consumption somewhat if that helped the environment, and 42% would replace their animal feed completely if there were an alternative of plant-based protein feed "acceptable".
The topic is exciting and we talked about GloboEconomía this week with Victoria Gaytan, Program Director at Global Americans and a contributor to Fortune magazine, in which she recently published an article on this topic.
Victoria has begun by explaining the differences between vegans, vegetarians and "flexitarians" - the latter especially interesting, because they are the ones that will grow the most in the coming years. He has described the strong link between the trend and the rise and prominence of the "millennial" and "Z" generations. And finally he has described to us the most outstanding thing that is happening in the American business world, dedicated to this mode of food. Including the successful IPO a few months ago of the firm Beyond Meat, which has been the great event of the IPO's 2019.
The subject, as I say, is certainly a trend, because a current of opinion is being formed that gives its food more and more importance and prominence, and for that reason it should definitely be followed closely. I hope that the conversation with Victoria Gaytan illustrates and entertains you at the same time.
