Blumel made the announcement Sunday after the meeting of President Sebastián Piñera with his cabinet and several political leaders.

According to the head of the Interior, a Constituent Congress will collect the demands that different sectors of citizens have made in the protests that broke out three weeks ago.

The Government has not yet offered details of how this Constituent Congress would work. However, Blumel said that the agreements of this congress must be ratified by citizens in a referendum.

The Constitution in force in Chile dates from 1980, at the time of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, although several reforms have been made.
