Outgoing EU Commission chief: Juncker for surgery in the hospital

2019-11-11T14:19:51.463Z

In the summer Jean-Claude Juncker broke off his vacation because of an urgent medical intervention. Now the outgoing EU Commission head is back in hospital. He will be operated on this week.

Jean-Claude Juncker has repeatedly struggled with health problems in the recent past. Now the outgoing EU Commission head is in hospital again. There is a major surgery planned because of an aneurysm, said his spokeswoman. The operation will take place tomorrow, Tuesday.

An aneurysm is a blood-filled protuberance of an artery that can suddenly rupture. In that case there is a risk of bleeding.

The 64-year-old Juncker had officially ended his term as President of the European Commission on 31 October. But he is still executive in office, because the commission of successor Ursula von der Leyen is not yet complete. Three countries had to nominate candidates, because the European Parliament had stopped the original contenders.

Care after appearance at NATO summit in 2018

Already in August Juncker had health problems. At that time, he broke off his vacation in Austria and had to go for an urgent operation on the gallbladder. He then recovered for a few days in his native Luxembourg before returning to work in Brussels.

Again and again Juncker complained of sciatica. So his appearance at the NATO summit in the summer of 2018 caused speculation. At that time, he swayed a lot, had to be supported. He suffered from sciatica and had leg cramps that day, he explained.
