The Socialist Party wins the elections in Spain, but does not win the majority

(CNN) - The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) won the elections on Sunday with 120 seats, but did not reach the parliamentary majority.

The leader of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, tweeted “our project is to form a stable progressive government led by @PSOE to make policies for the benefit of the majority. All parties must act with generosity and responsibility starting tomorrow to unlock the country. ”

The Popular Party (PP) won the second largest number of seats with 87. The far-right VOX party made a significant gain by doubling from 24 to 52 seats in parliament.

Spanish voters returned to the polls for the fourth time in the last 4 years. The PSOE also won most of the seats in the April elections of this year, but, after months of negotiations, failed to form a government.

A candidate needs a majority of 176 seats in Congress to win the elections and become prime minister.
