(CNN Spanish) - Sources of the National Police of Spain confirmed to CNN that they have an arrest warrant against Hugo Carvajal, former director of military counterintelligence in Venezuela, for extradition purposes to the United States. These sources add that the order emanates from a Spanish judicial authority, although they did not specify which.
Several local reports have reported that the arrest warrant would be the result of a ruling of the plenary of the Criminal Chamber of the National Court of Spain, which reportedly had agreed last Friday to the request for extradition of Carvajal by the US. .
CNN has not been able to confirm that ruling with the National Court.
In September, the Third Section of the Criminal Chamber of the National Court had rejected the same request from the United States because they did not specify “what specific acts with criminal nature the defendant carried out (…) in addition to missing a true account of concrete facts in the person of Carvajal ”.
Carvajal's lawyer told CNN on Tuesday that she had not been notified of the ruling or the arrest warrant against her client. He also states that he has not recently contacted Carvajal, a retired Venezuelan general, nor does he know where he is.
Hugo Carvajal himself explained the matter on Twitter this Monday: “Following press rumors, my lawyers went to the National Court on Friday and Saturday and constantly review the official notification system.
