For the first time they elect a Latin bishop to lead the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

José Gómez, archbishop of Los Angeles, was born in Mexico and has US citizenship. For several years he was vice president of the conference he will now lead.

(CNN Spanish) - The Archbishop of Los Angeles, José Gómez, was elected president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Gomez, born in Mexico and with US nationality, is the first Latino elected to lead this conference where he served as vice president since 2016.

The agency brings together all the Catholic bishops of the United States.

Gomez has also been a strong driver in the approval of immigration reform in the United States.
