Spanish police look for Hugo Carvajal, former intelligence director of Venezuela

(CNN) - A spokesman for the National Police of Spain confirmed to CNN that they are looking for the former director of the Intelligence service of Venezuela, Hugo Armando Carvajal, since Friday.

"We are looking for it to deliver to the Department of Justice," said the spokesman for the Spanish Police. "We've been looking for it since Friday when the (arrest) order was issued."

On Friday, the Spanish National Court issued an extradition order to the United States against Carvajal.

Carvajal's lawyer told CNN on Tuesday that she had not been notified of the ruling or the arrest warrant against her client. He also states that he has not recently contacted Carvajal, a retired Venezuelan general, nor does he know where he is.

Hugo Carvajal himself explained the matter on Twitter this Monday: “Following press rumors, my lawyers went to the National Court on Friday and Saturday and constantly review the official notification system. To date, neither my lawyers nor I have been formally notified of any court ruling on my case. ”

Carvajal was arrested in Spain in April 2019 and last September the National Court of Spain denied Carvajal's extradition to the United States.
