Protests in Iraq: At least four demonstrators killed in Baghdad

2019-11-14T10:10:53.439Z

For weeks protesters in the Iraqi capital Baghdad have been protesting against the government. Once again, people have been killed by the security forces.

At least four people were reportedly killed by news agencies in Baghdad in anti-government protests. More than 50 others were injured. According to AFP, people were killed by tear gas grenades.

Human rights organizations criticize their efforts because the shells are often aimed directly at demonstrators. In most victims, the skull was smashed by the projectiles. The grenades are ten times stronger, according to the UN, than models used in other countries.

Iraqis protest against social and economic problems

The Iraqi security forces are using tear gas grenades as well as live ammunition and rubber bullets. Since the demonstrations began in early October, more than 320 people have died, according to the official figures, about 20 of them from tear gas grenades, according to the UN.

In Baghdad and several southern Iraqi cities, a protest movement against corruption and high unemployment had formed in the country at the beginning of October. Despite the escalation of violence and nocturnal curfews, the Iraqis continue to take to the streets and demand the overthrow of the government.

The UN is currently putting pressure on the government in Baghdad to implement reforms. Among other things, it demands changes to the electoral law and the constitution. The protesters, however, this is not far enough. A few days ago, Iraqi President Barham Saleh announced new elections as soon as electoral reform was approved.
