The Department of Antiquities of Hama has completed the rehabilitation and restoration of the archaeological citadel of Shizar located in the north-western countryside of Hama.
Abdul Qader Farzat, head of Hama Antiquities Department, told SANA today that the restoration works of the castle, which is 24 km away from Hama city, included the restoration of its main entrance and the bridge extending to its entrance, which is estimated to be more than 80 meters in addition to the staircase leading to the castle door with the reinforcement of the archways. Farzat pointed out that the works also included the restoration of some of the interior walls of the castle with national hands and experiences in accordance with the archaeological character and architectural fabric of the historic castle, as well as the repair of the gaps inside the castle and a number of its cracked towers, pointing out that the total cost of restoration of the castle reached more than 17 million Syrian pounds.
It was built during the Seleucid period at the end of the 4th century BC on a rocky hill that bordered the Orontes River from the west.It was named among the ancient Syrian cities as Cesar and Sennar.It was named in the Seleucid period as Larissa, but the Syrians returned the old name of Shizar and are called locally Sigir Castle.
