Jakarta-Sana
A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale jolted eastern Indonesia, injuring at least two people and damaging buildings.
"The quake struck the Moluccas region late last night and was centered at sea, 139 km northwest of the city of Ternate," the US Geological Survey said.
Two people were slightly injured in Ternate in the northern province of Maluku, also known as Molokas, and six houses and two churches were damaged, said Agus Wipowo, a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster agency.
The local authorities canceled their tsunami warning about two hours after the earthquake, despite more than 90 aftershocks.
Indonesia is in the earthquake-ravaged Pacific Ring of Fire, where an earthquake and tsunami in late 2004 killed more than 120,000 people in the northern province of Aceh.
