(CNN) - After officers from the Sheriff's Office responded Thursday to a shooting at Saugus High School in southern California, six students were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds.

"Among those who were transferred was the suspect, who is currently in the hospital in serious condition," said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

In the hours after the student opened fire just after 7:30 am at Santa Clarita High School, killing a child under 16 and a child under 14 and injuring three other classmates, details about the Suspicious began to appear.

The shooting occurred on his 16th birthday, said Captain Kent Wegener, of the sheriff's department of homicides.

"The suspect was later identified as one of the victims found in the yard," Wegener told reporters. Subsequently, the captain told reporters that the shooting lasted only 16 seconds.

The attacker used a .45 caliber pistol, which was recovered at the scene, authorities said. The gun ran out of bullets.

The suspect's name is Nathaniel Berhow, two police sources told CNN.

Detectives reviewed the surveillance video of the scene that showed the suspect in the yard, Wegener said. He pulled a gun from his backpack and shot five other students before shooting himself in the head, the captain said.

The suspect is a resident of the city of Santa Clarita, about 48 miles northwest of Los Angeles, authorities said.

His mother and his girlfriend were talking to detectives, according to Wegener.

Investigators made a superficial review of the suspect's house and were awaiting an order to search the residence, Wegener said.

Paul Delacourt, deputy director of the FBI in charge in Los Angeles, said no additional threats are known and the reasons for the shooting are unknown.

Investigators will verify rumors that the suspect may have posted threats on social media, county deputy commissioner Tim Murakami said on Twitter.

"If you ever find out about published threats, let us know as soon as possible," Murakami wrote.

Wegener said they had learned that the suspect's biographical Instagram information had changed after the shooting. Before the massacre he said: "Saugus have fun at school tomorrow."

After announcing the death of the second student, Villanueva said: “With a heavy heart, we will continue with the investigation and find out what went wrong.

"I hate that Saugus is included among the names of Columbine, Parkland, Sandy Hook, but it is a reality that affects us throughout the country, something we will have to solve."

Steve Almasy and Hollie Silverman of CNN contributed to this report.
