(CNN) - The 16-year-old gunman who killed two high school classmates and shot three other students before shooting himself died in a hospital, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Friday night.
Authorities say the attack occurred on the suspect's birthday, that they searched his home and are questioning his relatives to find out his reasons. Several parents lived moments of terror as they learned about the attack through messages and calls from their children who were hiding from the shooting.
CNN identified as Nathaniel Berhow, had access to weapons and was competent in their use. The suspect's father was a hunter and possessed firearms. Other firearms were found in the house, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in an interview.
Berhow's motive remains unclear. There is no indication that the shooter is a social outcast or a victim of bullying, said the sheriff.
