(CNN Spanish) - The Ministry of Environment of El Salvador investigates the causes that have caused, in recent days, the death of thousands of mollusks on the coast of the department of La Unión, about 206 kilometers from San Salvador.

A technical team took samples to make an analysis and try to determine the causes.

“This is probably the result of pollution in the Gulf of Fonseca. When we have the results, we will inform you, ”Fernando López, Minister of the Environment of El Salvador, told reporters.

Artisanal fishermen say the losses are great. Zulma Reyes is dedicated to the extraction of clams and oysters to survive and ensures that most of them are dead.

For its part, the environmental court of San Miguel ordered the implementation of precautionary environmental protection measures on the coast of the department of La Unión.

According to the environmental court, at least six municipalities are directly linked because they discharge solid, dangerous, sewage and gray waste to the Bay of the Union, according to a statement issued Monday by the Isidro Menéndez Judicial Center of San Salvador.

Given this situation, the environmental judge ordered the mayors and several institutions, urgently, to prepare a cleaning plan in the area of ​​the Gulf of Fonseca and the Bay of La Unión.

The proposal must be prepared within 15 business days and will have to be submitted to the court. According to the statement, the mayors will be responsible for executing the cleaning plan as well as sanctioning people who litter the bay.
